Create a New Board

Goal: Create a new LeanKit Kanban board and lanes to represent the states of your team's work.

  1. Create a new board - After logging into your account, click the "Create New Board" link on the right-hand side of the window. Notice that this area displays how many boards your account permits

    .
  2. Select the Template from the available template library.  LeanKit Kanban provides some starter templates that you may choose from.  These templates can provide a starting point for mapping out your process flow.  These templates have been categorized into industries so that you can find an applicable template easily.  Users of the Professional and Team Editions will have access to all templates as well as custom templates defined for their organization.  Personal Edition users will be able to choose from the Default template category.

  3. Set the Title and Description - Next, give your new board a title and description. This distinguishes your new board from the other boards in your account. If you would like to base your WIP regulations on card size (the level of effort required for a card) rather than number of cards, check the box labeled 'Base WIP Limits on Card Size'.  If you choose to exclude the board from the overall organization dashboard, the metrics from this board will not be calculated in the Organization Dashboard (see The Organization Dashboard).  Excluding Completed Lanes and Archive from User WIP and Due Date Violations will automatically remove the card from a specific user’s WIP once the card is placed in a completed lane such as “Done” or the Archive. An example of this would be if user “Jason” has a WIP limit of 4 cards (meaning that no more than 4 cards can be assigned to him at any specific time) and a card is moved from an in progress lane to a completed lane, that card will no longer be considered part of Jason’s WIP limited (even though the card still exits).
    When finished, click Save Board.

Note: 'Base WIP Limits on Card Size', 'Exclude this Board from Organization Dashboard', and “Exclude Completed Lanes and Archive from user WIP and Due Date Violations' can all be changed after the board is created, so feel free to leave them blank and revisit as needed.

  4. To copy/clone an existing Board, click the Copy and Existing Board link.  This will display the option to select and existing Board.  Select the Board that you wish to copy and complete the form as you would for a new Board.  Click Copy Board will duplicate the selected Board's structure and attributes such as Card Types, Classes of Service, External Card ID settings and etc.

Next: Setup up your Board - After saving the title and description of your board, you will immediately be taken to the Board Edit view.  Within this view you will be able to configure your process steps and their properties.
